One of the famous ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries built in London during the Industrial Revolution, Abney Park was much needed in 1840. And at the heart of rebel Hackney, it was a place of huge symbolism to Non-Conformists, abolitionists and reformers. What many don’t realise is how places like this designated nature reserve keep our city alive now.

A wander through Abney is a promenade through modern London history. It’s the final resting place of a vast array of characters who played an important role in our city’s development: from famous inventors to electoral reformists, we’ve the radicals and the religious renegades lying next to abolitionists, aeronauts and adventurers.

There are famous writers and performers and the odd quack too. From infamous drinkers to promoters of Temperance they tell a story of our diverse city with its phenomenal growth and continual change.
