Special Mary Wollstonecraft Fundraising International Women’s Day Walk – Sat 9th March

Feminist fun at Newington Green.
This is where it all happened! The Occupy of the 1700s…

To celebrate International Women’s Day on Fri 8th March, we’re running our Feminist (Or Is It?) walk in reverse on Sat 9th.

This time we’ll START at the place of Mary Wollstonecraft’s radicalisation, the Unitarian Chapel at Newington Green (10-15 mins walk from either Dalston Kingsland or Dalston Junction). We’ll get a short talk and tour of the chapel* from Hackney’s most passionate and articulate advocate of the woman credited with giving birth to modern feminism – journalist, educationalist, protestor and ‘revolutionary’ Mary Wollstonecraft.

Then we’ll walk in the footsteps of Hackney’s other big-hitting females who’ve changed world history and finish up at Stoke Newington’s Abney Park cemetery (handy for buses or Stoke Newington Rail).

Half the proceeds will go to the fund for a statue of Mary at Newington Green. As Mary said, the issue of equal (not superior) rights directly affected half the planet. Indirectly, it affected the other half.

So, in the same way as everyone can learn from slavery walks – regardless of ethnicity – everyone can learn from ‘feminist’ walks – and everyone is very welcome. After all, you wouldn’t expect women to boycott tours of central London because ‘it’s all about male generals’ would you? We’ll discuss briefly what the F-word means and if we are happy to call ourselves that.

Do come, we’d love to see you! And if you’re going to the Upper Street Unitarian IWD events don’t worry, we’ll be done by 1pm!
